Anyone who has asked me, "where do you buy your fabric since JoAnns closed?" knows the answer. Tokyo, Nippori Fabric Town. I have had the privilege to visit Japan a few times in the past few years. I regularly show off all the cool items and fabric I have bought in Japan. So at the suggestion of several students, I have planned a fabric shopping, handicrafting, sightseeing trip to my favorite places in Tokyo and some exciting new locations.
September 1-12, 2027
September 1-7th we will be in Tokyo. Our hotel is near the beautiful Ueno Park home to several cultural museums and the Tokyo Zoo. We have a lovely split between guided trips to Senso-ji, Tokyo Tower, Sashiko workshop, indigo dyeing workshop and kintsugi workshop, a food tour, a tea ceremony with a sweet making class and leisurely shopping in Nippori Fabric Town, Kappabashi Kitchen Town and some other cool shops depending on how our feet hold out. We will have private transport for the tour guide planned activities and get to try out Tokyo's famous train system for our casual shopping days. I have purposely left our last "free" day in Tokyo open for us to do something we would all like that day or let you explore on your own.
September 8-9th we will be headed to Nikko, famous for fall foliage, on the famous Shinkansen bullet train for a day of touring with a guide. We will see the famous Kegon Falls, Toshogu Shrine, Rinno-ji Temple and the Tamozawa Imperial Villa. The next day we will visit Edo Wonderland, an immersive history theme park with crafts, shows and costumed characters.
September 10th We will be in Hakone within sight of the iconic Mount Fugi (assuming the weather cooperates). We will visit Owakudani Valley and the Hakone Ropeway and have a cruise on the Lake Ashi Pirate Ship. Last stop is the Hakone Open-Air Museum. At the hotel this evening we will have a traditional Japanese Kaiseki dinner. You can relax in a traditional Japanese Onsen or the private bath in your room.
September 11th We head to Narita to indulge in the spa facilities at the hotel and explore the historic areas around Narita airport.
We will be a small group. We will be having group meetings/zooms to plan and prepare prior to our trip. I will be creating some resources and links as we get closer to our departure date.
The box on the side has the link to the full itinerary. Please feel free to contact me for more information.
